DEVELOPMENTAL STRIDES OF GOVERNOR SULLIVAN CHIME’S ADMINISTRATION IN ENUGU STATE: TRANSPORT [By Afam Okereke]

The creation of a full-fledged Ministry of Transport in Enugu State was the initiative of the State Governor Mr. Sullivan Chime, marking  one year of his assumption in office in 2007.  Created on 30th January 2008, the ministry was charged with the responsibility of ensuring that our peoples’ transport needs were handled properly.  To actualize this, about 720 taxi cabs operating under Coal City Cabs were acquired by the Enugu State government and leased out to youths on repayment, spread over three years.

Also about 50 luxury buses were purchased and are operating as Coal City Shuttle in the state to help reduce problem of commuters and high transport fare.  School children enjoy free ride on the Coal City Shuttle to and from their schools on a daily basis.  To enhance smooth flow of traffic, the administration of Governor Chime saw the need to mark the roads properly like what is obtained in developed countries with traffic controlled lights with surveillance cameras. Currently the ministry banned the use of Commercial Motorcycle otherwise known as Okada to ensure security and resolve order on our roads especially within the state capital.  Also, the ministry is conducting biometric registration of commercial vehicles; buses and cabs and assigns them routes and fleet numbers to ensure effective control of their operations.

In addition to ensure that order is maintained on our roads, the ministry conducts public enlightenment campaign in public places and its establishing testing ground for drivers at Emene in Enugu State.  It also introduced mobile courts to try traffic offenders and is working in collaboration with NURTW/Coal City Shuttle and Tricycle operators and other law enforcement agents to ensure safety on the roads in Enugu state.
