The Ministry of
Environment was established in Enugu State in 2004. The overall sector vision
of the ministry is to actualize sustainable ecosystem that will enhance human
and economic development of the state in line with the 4 point agenda of
governor Chime’s administration. In addition, the ministry is to improve
on the beauty and aesthetics of the physical environment and adequate protection
of the ecosystem and effectively marriage solid wastes in the state. From the
crude method of waste disposal and management it inherited, the ministry
introduced a modern scientific approach to refuse collection, disposal and
solid waste management.
In collaboration
with other department and agencies under the ministry articulated programmes
and projects for the promotion of regular environmental sanitation and
pollution control in Enugu state . In 2007, more than 15 waste
disposal compactors and over one hundred dumpsters were procured and deployed
in all parts of the state capital and Nsukka Urban.
The Enugu State
Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) an establishment under the ministry also
introduced monthly sanitation exercise and street by street collection of
refuse on daily basis. In 2011, government truck delivery of 285 refuse
bin holding pad, built 283 conventional refuse bin slabs and fire motorized bin
slabs in major urban roads in the state capital and Nsukka. Presently
government procured ten new refuse compacts trucks yet to be deployed to
enhance refuse collection and disposal in the state Apart from refuse
collection and disposal the ministry has encouraged community forest reserves,
urban beautification and establishment of waste recycling project with all
these facilities in place and with the corporation of the residents. Just
recently, the Enugu State Government approved the contract worth over there hundred
and twenty two million for the purchase of earth moving equipment for the State
Waste Management Authority. The approval for the award of the contract was
given by the State Governor; Mr. Sullivan Chime in Enugu.
Briefing the
press at the end of the council meeting, the State Commissioner for
Information, Mr, Chuks Ugwoke said that items to be purchased included three
tippers, two bulldozers and pail loaders each.
According to Mr.
Ugwoke, the decision to purchase the equipment was in keeping with the resolve of the Chime administration to ensure and maintain a very clean and healthy
environment in the state and check the amount spent in hiring these equipment
in the past. With all these in place, Enugu State is gradually assuming the position as one of the cleanest city in the South East Nigeria.
